Earlier Vijayawada City was a part of Krishna District Police. In 1983, a separate Krishna Urban Police District was formed with headquarters at Vijayawada and is headed by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police. Later in the year 1989, Krishna Urban Police District was upgraded into Police Commissionerate by merging surrounding areas of Vijayawada City with Deputy Inspector General of Police rank officer as Police Commissioner. In August 2014, the post of Commissioner of Police was upgraded to the rank of Additional Director General of Police. At present, Director General of Police rank officer is holding the post of Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada City.
The area of Police Commissionerate is 1211.16 Sq. Kms., and the population is around 18,39,720 (13 lakhs urban population and remaining is rural population), with a daily floating population of 4 to 5 lakhs. The Commissionerate area comprises Vijayawada Municipal Corporation proper and surrounding 179 villages of 9 mandals viz., Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada Rural, Penamaluru, Gannavaram, Unguturu, Kankipadu, Vuyyuru, Thotlavalluru and Pamidimukkala of Krishna District. Most of the area in the Police Commissionerate is wet land and is irrigated by canal water (viz. Bandar canal, Eluru canal and Ryvus canal which are passing through the city). The Commissionerate has borders with Krishna District Police on the East, North and West; river the Krishna on South.
