NTR District was newly proposed district is named as NTR District as a mark of respect and recognition of the stellar contribution of Sri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Garu, who officiated for 3 times as a Chief Minister of Combined Andhra Pradesh. NTR District with its district head quarters at Vijayawada formerly called as Bezawada.
Earlier Vijayawada City was a part of Krishna District Police. In 1983, a separate Krishna Urban Police District was formed with headquarters at Vijayawada and is headed by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police. Later in the year 1989, Krishna Urban Police District was upgraded into Police Commissionerate by merging surrounding areas of Vijayawada City with Deputy Inspector General of Police rank officer as Police Commissioner. In August 2014, the post of Commissioner of Police was upgraded to the rank of Additional Director General of Police. At present, Inspector General of Police rank officer is holding the post of Commissioner of Police, NTR Police Commissionerate.
The area of Police Commissionerate is 3316 Sq. Kms., and the population is around 22,18,591 (15 lakhs urban population and remaining is rural population), with a daily floating population of 4 to 5 lakhs. The Commissionerate area comprises Vijayawada Municipal Corporation proper and surrounding 321 villages of 20 mandals viz., Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada Rural, Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Central, Vijayawada North, Vijayawada East, Nandigama, Kanchikacherla, Chandarlapadu, Veerullapadu, Jaggayapeta,Vatsavai, Penuganchiprolu, Mylavaram, G.Konduru, Reddigudem, Tiruvuru, Visannapet Gampalagudem, A.Konduru. Most of the area in the Police Commissionerate is wet land and is irrigated by canal water (viz. Bandar canal, Eluru canal and Ryvus canal which are passing through the city). It was surrounded on the East by Eluru District, on South by Krishna on West by Guntur and Nalgonda Districts and on North by Khammam District.
